Face Yoga Exercises for Firmer Skin
The Science Behind Face Yoga
A 2018 Northwestern University study found that 30 minutes of daily facial exercises for 20 weeks resulted in measurably firmer cheeks and an estimated 3-year reduction in perceived facial age. The exercises build underlying muscle volume, which plumps the overlying skin.
Exercise 1: Cheek Lifter
Open your mouth to form an O shape, folding your upper lip over your teeth. Smile to lift the cheek muscles, then place your index fingers on the cheekbones. Relax and repeat 15 times. This targets the zygomaticus muscles for lifted cheeks.
Exercise 2: Forehead Smoother
Place both hands on your forehead with fingers spread. Apply gentle pressure while raising your eyebrows, creating resistance. Hold for 10 seconds, relax, repeat 10 times. This strengthens the frontalis muscle and smooths horizontal lines.
Exercise 3: Jaw Definer
Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling. Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth and hold for 10 seconds. You should feel the muscles under your chin contract. Repeat 15 times. Targets the platysma for a defined jawline.
Exercise 4: Eye Firmer
Place your index fingers at the outer corners of your eyes and middle fingers at the inner corners. Look up and squint your lower eyelids. Hold for 5 seconds, relax, repeat 10 times. Strengthens the orbicularis oculi to reduce crows feet.
Exercise 5: Neck Tightener
Sit straight and tilt your head back. Push your lower lip over your upper lip as far as possible. Hold for 5 deep breaths. Repeat 10 times. Targets the platysma and sternocleidomastoid for a tighter neck.
Best Practices
- Practice daily for at least 20 minutes
- Apply face oil before exercises to reduce friction
- Do not tug or pull the skin aggressively
- Results appear after 8-12 weeks of consistent practice
