Facial Exercises for Firmness: Do They Work
The Science Behind Face Yoga
A 2018 Northwestern University study found that 30 minutes of daily facial exercises for 20 weeks resulted in measurably fuller cheeks and a 3-year reduction in perceived age.
How Facial Muscles Respond to Exercise
Like body muscles, facial muscles grow with resistance training. This increases volume beneath the skin, creating a lifted appearance and reducing the sagging associated with aging.
Five Effective Exercises
- Cheek lifter: smile widely while pressing fingertips on cheekbones. Hold 10 seconds, repeat 10 times.
- Jaw definer: tilt head back, push lower jaw forward. Hold 10 seconds for jawline definition.
- Forehead smoother: place palms on forehead, sweep outward with gentle pressure. Repeat 20 times.
- Eye firmer: form circles with thumbs and index fingers around eyes. Gently stretch. Hold 5 seconds.
- Neck tightener: press tongue to roof of mouth, tilt head back. Feel the stretch under chin.
Consistency Is Critical
Results require daily practice for at least 8-12 weeks. Skipping days delays progress. Build the routine into your existing skincare ritual for better adherence.
What Facial Exercises Cannot Do
They will not eliminate deep wrinkles, replace injectables, or reverse significant sagging. They are a complementary approach, not a replacement for other anti-aging strategies.
Combining With Skincare
Apply facial oil before exercises to reduce friction. Follow with your regular serum and moisturizer routine. The increased blood flow may enhance product absorption.
