Face Yoga: Exercises That Reduce Fine Lines
Does Face Yoga Actually Work
A 2018 Northwestern University study found that 30 minutes of daily facial exercise over 20 weeks improved cheek fullness and made participants look an average of three years younger. The mechanism involves strengthening underlying facial muscles, which provides structural support to the overlying skin.
Exercise 1: Forehead Smoother
Place both palms flat on your forehead, fingers spread. Gently sweep outward toward the temples while raising your eyebrows against the resistance. Hold for 10 seconds. Repeat 5 times. This targets the frontalis muscle and helps soften horizontal forehead lines.
Exercise 2: Eye Circles (Crow's Feet)
Form circles with your thumbs and index fingers around each eye socket. Gently stretch the skin outward while squinting your eyes shut. Hold for 8 seconds, relax, and repeat 5 times. This strengthens the orbicularis oculi muscle around the eyes.
Exercise 3: Cheek Lifter
Smile widely while keeping your lips closed. Place your index fingers on the tops of your cheekbones. Lift the cheeks upward toward your eyes while resisting with your fingers. Hold for 10 seconds. Repeat 8 times. This targets the zygomaticus major muscle.
Exercise 4: Jaw Definer
Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling. Push your lower jaw forward until you feel a stretch under the chin. Hold for 10 seconds. Repeat 5 times. This works the platysma and digastric muscles along the jawline.
Exercise 5: Nasolabial Fold Softener
Fill your cheeks with air. Move the air from one cheek to the other slowly, holding each side for 5 seconds. Then move the air to your upper lip and hold for 5 seconds. Complete 10 cycles. This strengthens the buccinator muscles that support the cheek area.
Tips for Consistency
- Practice in front of a mirror to ensure correct form
- Pair with your morning or evening skincare routine
- Start with 5 minutes daily — increase to 15 minutes as habits form
- Take a before photo and compare at 8 weeks
- Apply facial oil before exercises to reduce friction on the skin
