Niacinamide Concentrations: Is 10% Too Much?
Evidence for Lower Concentrations
Every pivotal study used 2-5%. The original P&G research (Bissett et al., 2005) showed increased collagen and improved barrier at 5%. No additional benefit at higher concentrations.
Why Brands Went to 10%+
Marketing, not science. The Ordinary popularized 10% niacinamide in 2016, and brands followed to appear stronger despite no clinical evidence.
Problems with High Concentrations
Irritation and Flushing
At 10%+, flushing occurs in approximately 30% of users. This is vasodilation from excessive niacin conversion, not a purge.
Impurity Concerns
Lower-quality niacinamide contains nicotinic acid impurities. At 10%, these reach irritation-causing levels. Pharmaceutical-grade at 5% avoids this.
Formulation Issues
High concentrations pill under sunscreen and makeup. May destabilize vitamin C in the same routine.
My Recommendations
Beginners: 2-3% (CeraVe PM). Experienced: 4-5% (sweet spot). Sensitive skin: 2% in moisturizer. The Paula's Choice 10% Booster is fine if used every other day.
Layering
Stable at pH 5-7. Compatible with most actives. Pairs excellently with retinol (reduces irritation), hyaluronic acid, and peptides.
