Retinol for Beginners: 2026 Guide
What Retinol Does
Retinol (Vitamin A derivative) accelerates cell turnover, boosts collagen production, and fades hyperpigmentation. Clinical results visible in 8-12 weeks.
Starting Concentration
- Sensitive skin: 0.025% (start here)
- Normal skin: 0.05%
- Resilient skin: 0.1%
The Sandwich Method (Minimizes Irritation)
- Cleanse and pat dry
- Apply moisturizer (thin layer)
- Apply pea-sized retinol
- Apply moisturizer again
Building Schedule
- Week 1-2: Twice per week (Mon + Thu)
- Week 3-4: Three times per week
- Week 5+: Every other night if tolerated
Expected Side Effects (Normal)
Mild peeling, dryness, and temporary redness in weeks 1-4. This is the "retinization" period. If you experience burning, severe redness, or blistering, stop and reduce frequency.
Non-Negotiable Rules
- Apply at night only (sunlight degrades retinol)
- Wear SPF 30+ daily (retinol increases sun sensitivity)
- Don't combine with AHA/BHA on the same night
- Don't use during pregnancy or breastfeeding
