Retinol vs Bakuchiol: Anti-Aging Pick
The Retinol Gold Standard
Retinol increases cell turnover, stimulates collagen I and III, and reduces matrix metalloproteinases. The most studied anti-aging ingredient in dermatology.
Bakuchiol: Plant-Based Alternative
From Psoralea corylifolia seeds, bakuchiol activates similar gene pathways. A 2018 BJOD study showed comparable wrinkle reduction at 12 weeks with less irritation.
Clinical Comparison
Wrinkle reduction at 12 weeks: Retinol 32% vs Bakuchiol 28%. Hyperpigmentation: Retinol 45% vs Bakuchiol 38%. Irritation: Retinol 58% vs Bakuchiol 12%.
Choose Retinol If:
Resilient skin, want maximum collagen stimulation, commit to nightly use with SPF 50+.
Choose Bakuchiol If:
Sensitive or rosacea-prone skin, pregnant/breastfeeding, want daytime use.
Use Both
Bakuchiol stabilizes retinol and enhances efficacy. Bakuchiol AM, retinol PM for synergistic benefits.
My Prescribing Approach
Ages 25-35: Bakuchiol 1% for 8 weeks, then add retinol 0.25% twice weekly. Ages 35-50: Retinol 0.5% with bakuchiol on off nights. Ages 50+: Tretinoin 0.025% with bakuchiol maintenance.
