SPF Daily: Why It's Non-Negotiable
The UV Aging Equation
Research consistently shows that UV exposure accounts for approximately 80% of visible facial aging. This includes wrinkles, dark spots, loss of elasticity, and uneven texture. No expensive serum can undo what unprotected sun exposure creates.
UVA vs UVB: Know the Difference
- UVB — causes sunburn, strongest midday, blocked by glass
- UVA — penetrates deeper, causes aging, passes through windows, present all day
You need broad-spectrum protection against both. SPF ratings only measure UVB protection. Look for "broad spectrum" on the label.
Common Excuses (And Why They're Wrong)
"I'm indoors all day"
UVA rays penetrate windows. If you sit near a window or drive a car, you're getting UVA exposure. Blue light from screens may also contribute to hyperpigmentation.
"It's cloudy outside"
Up to 80% of UV rays pass through clouds. You can get sun damage on overcast days just as easily as sunny ones.
"My moisturizer has SPF"
Most SPF moisturizers provide inadequate protection because people apply too thin a layer. You need about 1/4 teaspoon for the face alone. Use a dedicated sunscreen.
How to Choose the Right SPF
- Oily skin: Lightweight, matte-finish chemical sunscreens
- Dry skin: Cream-based formulas with hydrating ingredients
- Dark skin tones: Chemical or hybrid formulas (no white cast)
- Sensitive skin: Mineral (zinc oxide) formulas
The Bottom Line
Apply SPF 30 or higher every morning, reapply every 2 hours if outdoors. This single habit does more for anti-aging than any retinol, peptide, or vitamin C serum alone.
