Sunscreen: The Best Anti-Aging Product
Photoaging: The Primary Aging Cause
Up to 80 percent of visible facial aging is caused by UV exposure. UV radiation breaks down collagen, damages elastin, triggers melanin overproduction, and creates DNA-damaging free radicals.
The Evidence
A 2013 Australian study of 900 participants over 4.5 years found that daily SPF 15+ sunscreen users showed 24 percent less skin aging compared to occasional users.
What Sunscreen Prevents
- Wrinkles from collagen degradation
- Age spots from melanin disruption
- Leathery texture from elastin damage
- Visible blood vessels from UV-induced vessel damage
Choosing the Right Sunscreen
Look for broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Chemical filters absorb UV, mineral filters reflect it. Either type works if applied adequately.
Application Amount
Use approximately one quarter teaspoon for the face. Most people apply only 25 to 50 percent of the recommended amount. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors.
