Curly Hair Wash Day Routine That Works
Understanding Your Curl Pattern
Before building a wash day routine, identify your curl type. Type 2 (wavy) needs lighter products, Type 3 (curly) thrives with creams and gels, and Type 4 (coily) requires rich butters and oils. Your routine should match your pattern.
Pre-Poo: Protect Before You Wash
Apply a lightweight oil (coconut, olive, or argan) to dry hair 30 minutes before washing. This prevents the shampoo from stripping too much natural oil and reduces hygral fatigue, the swelling and contracting that damages curls over time.
Cleanse: Sulfate-Free Is the Way
Use a sulfate-free shampoo or co-wash depending on your needs. Focus on the scalp, massaging with fingertips (not nails). Rinse thoroughly. If you use heavy products or silicones, clarify once every 2-3 weeks with a gentle clarifying shampoo.
Condition and Detangle
Apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle while the conditioner is in. Never brush dry curly hair as this causes breakage and frizz. Let the conditioner do the work for 3-5 minutes.
Deep Condition Weekly
Once a week, swap your regular conditioner for a deep treatment. Look for ingredients like shea butter, honey, and hydrolyzed protein. Apply under a shower cap for 20-30 minutes. Heat helps penetration, wrap a warm towel over the cap.
Styling: The LOC/LCO Method
On soaking wet hair, apply products in order:
- LOC: Leave-in conditioner then Oil then Cream (best for high-porosity hair)
- LCO: Leave-in conditioner then Cream then Oil (best for low-porosity hair)
Scrunch upward to encourage curl formation. Avoid touching your hair while it dries.
