Hair Porosity Testing and Care Guide
What Is Hair Porosity
Hair porosity describes how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture, determined by the condition of your cuticle layer.
The Float Test
Place a clean strand in water. Floats = low porosity. Middle = medium. Sinks = high porosity.
Low Porosity Hair Care
Use warm water to open cuticles. Lightweight oils like argan penetrate better than heavy butters.
Medium Porosity Hair Care
The easiest to manage. Maintain with regular deep conditioning and occasional protein treatments.
High Porosity Hair Care
Use the LOC method: Liquid, Oil, Cream. Cold water rinses help close cuticles after washing.
Factors That Change Porosity
Chemical treatments, heat styling, and sun exposure increase porosity over time.
