Heat Styling Damage: Prevention and Repair
How Heat Damages Hair
Temperatures above 300F break the hydrogen bonds and disulfide bridges in hair keratin structure. Water inside the hair shaft turns to steam, creating bubbles that weaken the strand. Repeated heat exposure permanently denatures keratin proteins.
Heat Protectant Ingredients That Work
- Cyclomethicone/dimethicone: form a thermal barrier coating each strand
- Hydrolyzed proteins: reinforce weakened keratin bonds
- Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5): retains moisture inside the hair shaft
- Ceramides: seal the cuticle to prevent moisture escape
Temperature Guidelines by Hair Type
Fine or chemically-treated hair: maximum 300F. Medium or wavy hair: 300-350F. Coarse or very curly hair: up to 400F. Always start at the lowest effective temperature.
Repairing Existing Heat Damage
Olaplex No.3 rebuilds broken disulfide bonds. Weekly protein treatments temporarily patch damaged areas. Bond-building treatments are the only products that genuinely repair heat damage.
