Men's Beard Care Routine: Products and Techniques That Work
Beard Hair vs Scalp Hair
Beard hair is thicker, coarser, more porous. The skin underneath produces more sebum. Beard care requires different products than hair care.
Essential Beard Routine
Washing (2-3x weekly)
Never use regular shampoo on beards. Use beard-specific wash with gentle surfactants. Over-washing is the number 1 cause of dry, itchy beards.
Conditioning (every wash)
Beard conditioner for 2-3 minutes, focusing on ends and skin underneath. Prevents split ends and keeps beard soft.
Beard Oil (daily, after washing)
Apply to damp beard, working into skin. Jojoba oil mimics human sebum. Mix with argan oil. 3-5 drops short beards, 6-10 full beards.
Beard Balm (for styling)
Beeswax for hold plus conditioning butters. Best for beards 2+ inches. Warm between palms, distribute evenly.
Brushing (daily)
Boar bristle brush distributes natural oils from skin to tips. Brush in direction of growth.
Common Problems
Beardruff: Reduce washing, increase oil. Patchy growth: Minoxidil 5%, give 3-6 months. Itchiness: Normal first 4 weeks, push through with daily oil.
Trimming Schedule
Neckline: every 3-5 days. Cheek line: weekly. Length: every 2-3 weeks. Always trim on dry, combed beard.
