Skincare Ingredients You Should Never Mix
When Actives Clash
More actives doesn't mean better results. Some ingredient combinations are counterproductive, while others can damage your skin barrier.
Retinol + AHA/BHA = Irritation
Both are exfoliants that accelerate cell turnover. Using them together overwhelms the skin barrier, causing redness, peeling, and sensitivity. Solution: Use retinol at night and AHAs on alternate nights.
Vitamin C + Niacinamide = Myth Debunked
Old research from the 1960s suggested these cancel each other out. Modern formulations are stable enough to work together. You can safely use both — apply vitamin C first, wait 10 minutes, then niacinamide.
Benzoyl Peroxide + Retinol = Inactivation
Benzoyl peroxide oxidizes retinol, rendering it ineffective. Solution: Use benzoyl peroxide in the morning and retinol at night.
AHA + Vitamin C = Over-Exfoliation Risk
Both are acidic. Layering them can drop the skin's pH too low, causing irritation. Solution: Use vitamin C in the morning and AHA at night, or on alternate days.
Safe Pairings
