Dermatologist Morning Routine: Sensitive Skin, 5 Steps

Why Less Is More for Sensitive Skin

After treating thousands of patients with reactive skin, I've learned that most sensitive skin issues come from over-complicated routines. The skin barrier doesn't need 10 products; it needs the right 5, applied correctly.

Step 1: Lukewarm Water Rinse

Unless you have very oily skin, morning cleansing with water alone is sufficient. Overnight, your skin produces beneficial lipids and natural moisturizing factors. Stripping these with a cleanser every morning weakens the barrier.

Step 2: Soothing Toner/Essence

A centella asiatica or mugwort essence provides anti-inflammatory benefits. Pat gently onto damp skin. Look for products with madecassoside at 1% or more and no fragrance.

Step 3: Barrier-Supporting Serum

Niacinamide 5% + panthenol is my go-to recommendation. This combination strengthens the barrier, reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and calms redness. Avoid 10%+ niacinamide.

Step 4: Ceramide Moisturizer

A ceramide-dominant moisturizer (ceramides + cholesterol + fatty acids in 3:1:1 ratio) seals in hydration. Apply to slightly damp skin for better absorption.

Step 5: Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

For sensitive skin, I always recommend mineral (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide) sunscreens. Zinc oxide has inherent anti-inflammatory properties and provides broad-spectrum protection without stinging.
