Double Cleansing: A Beginner-Friendly Guide
What Is Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing uses two types of cleanser — first an oil-based formula, then a water-based one — to thoroughly remove makeup, sunscreen, and impurities without stripping the skin.
Why Two Steps?
Oil dissolves oil. Sunscreen, sebum, and waterproof makeup are oil-soluble, so a water-based cleanser alone leaves residue behind. The oil cleanser lifts this layer first, then the second cleanser deep-cleans the pores.
Step 1: Oil Cleanser
Apply to dry skin. Massage for 60 seconds, paying attention to the nose, chin, and hairline. Add water to emulsify — the oil turns milky white. Rinse with lukewarm water.
Key Ingredients to Look For
- Jojoba oil (closest to human sebum)
- Squalane (lightweight, non-comedogenic)
- Rice bran oil (gentle, antioxidant-rich)
Step 2: Water-Based Cleanser
Apply to damp skin. Massage for 30 seconds using gentle circular motions. Rinse thoroughly.
Choose Based on Skin Type
- Gel cleanser: oily or acne-prone skin
- Cream cleanser: dry or sensitive skin
- Foam cleanser: combination skin
Common Mistakes
- Using micellar water as the first step (not effective for heavy sunscreen)
- Skipping the emulsification step (leaves oily residue)
- Using hot water (strips the moisture barrier)
- Over-cleansing (more than 90 seconds total per step)
How Often?
Double cleanse every evening if you wear sunscreen or makeup. On no-makeup days, a single water-based cleanse is sufficient.
