Double Cleansing Method Explained Simply
What Is Double Cleansing
Double cleansing uses an oil-based cleanser first, followed by a water-based cleanser. The oil dissolves makeup, sunscreen, and sebum; the water cleanser removes sweat and dirt.
Why One Cleanse Is Not Enough
Water-based cleansers struggle to dissolve oil-soluble impurities like sunscreen and waterproof makeup. An oil cleanser breaks these down first, allowing the second cleanse to actually clean your skin.
Step 1: Oil Cleanser
Apply to dry skin and massage for 60 seconds. Add water to emulsify (it turns milky), then rinse. Options: cleansing balms, cleansing oils, or micellar water for sensitive skin.
Step 2: Water Cleanser
Choose based on skin type: gel cleanser for oily skin, cream cleanser for dry skin, foam cleanser for combination skin. Massage for 30-60 seconds, then rinse with lukewarm water.
When to Double Cleanse
Evening only. Morning skin does not have makeup or sunscreen to remove—a single gentle cleanse or even a water rinse is sufficient.
