Korean Skincare Routine: Beginner's Guide
What Makes K-Beauty Different
Korean skincare emphasizes hydration, gentle layering, and prevention over aggressive treatment. The famous 10-step routine is a framework, not a requirement.
The Essential 6 Steps
1. Oil Cleanser. Dissolves sunscreen and makeup without stripping skin. Massage onto dry face, emulsify with water, rinse.
2. Water-Based Cleanser. Removes remaining impurities. Low pH, gentle foam or gel. This double cleanse ensures a truly clean canvas.
3. Toner (Hydrating). Unlike Western astringent toners, K-beauty toners are hydrating. Pat in multiple thin layers for deep hydration.
4. Essence. The heart of K-beauty. Fermented ingredients (galactomyces, bifida) improve texture and absorption of subsequent products.
5. Serum/Ampoule. Targeted treatment: vitamin C for brightening, snail mucin for repair, propolis for acne.
6. Moisturizer + SPF. Seal everything in. AM: add SPF as final step.
Optional Additions
Sheet masks 2-3x weekly for intensive hydration. Sleeping masks overnight for extra moisture. Exfoliation 1-2x weekly (preferably chemical: PHA or low-percentage AHA).
Where to Start
Don't buy 10 products at once. Start with cleanser, toner, moisturizer, SPF. Add one new product every 2 weeks to see what works for your skin.
