How to Layer Skincare Actives Safely
The pH Problem
Active ingredients work at specific pH levels. Applying conflicting pH products together neutralizes both.
Safe Morning Sequence
Gentle cleanser, vitamin C on dry skin, wait 2 min, niacinamide, moisturizer, sunscreen.
Safe Evening Sequence
Alternate actives by night. Night A: retinol. Night B: AHA or BHA. Never layer retinol with acids.
Combinations to Avoid
- Retinol + AHA/BHA: excessive irritation
- Vitamin C + retinol: pH conflict
- Benzoyl peroxide + retinol: deactivates retinol
Combinations That Work
- Niacinamide + retinol: calms irritation
- Hyaluronic acid + any active: universal hydrator
- Vitamin C + E + ferulic acid: enhanced protection
Introducing New Actives
Add one at a time, waiting two weeks between introductions.
