How to Layer Skincare Actives Correctly
Why Order Matters
Skincare is applied thinnest to thickest, but actives also have pH requirements and compatibility issues. Getting the order wrong can deactivate ingredients or cause chemical burns.
The Correct Layering Order
Step 1: Cleanser. Remove dirt and oil. Double cleanse if wearing sunscreen or makeup.
Step 2: pH-Dependent Actives. Vitamin C (L-AA, pH 2.5-3.5) or exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA, pH 3-4). Apply to clean, dry skin. Wait 15-20 minutes before next step.
Step 3: Water-Based Serums. Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides. These work at neutral pH and layer well over acids.
Step 4: Retinol/Retinoid. Apply to dry skin. If using acids in the same routine, alternate nights instead.
Step 5: Moisturizer. Seals in everything below. Choose based on skin type.
Step 6: Oil (optional). Applied after moisturizer to lock in hydration.
Step 7: SPF (AM only). Always last in morning routine.
Incompatible Combinations
- Retinol + AHA/BHA: Too irritating together (alternate nights)
- Vitamin C + Niacinamide: Actually fine (old myth debunked)
- Retinol + Vitamin C: Use C in AM, retinol in PM
- Benzoyl peroxide + Retinol: BP deactivates retinol
