Skincare Layering: The Correct Product Order
The Thin-to-Thick Rule
Products should be applied from thinnest (most aqueous) to thickest (most occlusive). This ensures each layer penetrates before the next seals it in. Applying a thick cream before a thin serum blocks the serum from reaching your skin.
Correct Morning Order
- Cleanser (gentle, non-foaming)
- Toner (hydrating, not astringent)
- Vitamin C serum (L-ascorbic acid, 10-20%)
- Eye cream
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen SPF 30+ (always last in skincare)
Correct Evening Order
- Oil cleanser (if wearing makeup/SPF)
- Water-based cleanser
- Exfoliant (AHA/BHA — only 2-3x per week)
- Toner
- Treatment serum (retinol OR niacinamide, not both)
- Eye cream
- Night cream or sleeping mask
Wait Times Between Layers
Vitamin C: wait 5 minutes. Retinol: wait 10 minutes. AHA/BHA: wait 15-20 minutes. Other products: 30-60 seconds is sufficient.
