Layering Skincare: The Right Order
The Thinnest-to-Thickest Rule
The fundamental principle of skincare layering is simple: apply products from thinnest consistency to thickest. Water-based products go before oil-based ones, because oil creates a barrier that prevents water-based formulas from penetrating.
Morning Routine Order
- Cleanser — gentle, pH-balanced formula
- Toner — hydrating or exfoliating (not both)
- Vitamin C serum — antioxidant protection for the day
- Eye cream — apply with ring finger, pat gently
- Moisturizer — lock in hydration
- Sunscreen — SPF 30+ minimum, always last
Night Routine Order
- Oil cleanser — removes SPF and makeup
- Water-based cleanser — removes remaining impurities
- Exfoliant — AHA/BHA, 2-3 times per week only
- Toner — hydrating formula to prep skin
- Serum — retinol or peptide treatment
- Eye cream — richer formula for overnight repair
- Moisturizer or sleeping mask — seal everything in
Common Mistakes
- Applying retinol before toner (retinol needs slightly damp skin)
- Using vitamin C and retinol at the same time (they work at different pH levels)
- Applying sunscreen before moisturizer (SPF should be the final step)
- Layering too many actives at once (causes irritation and cancels benefits)
When in Doubt
Wait 30-60 seconds between layers. This gives each product time to absorb before the next one goes on. Rushing leads to pilling and wasted product.
