AM vs PM Skincare: Correct Product Order
Applying skincare products in the wrong order can render expensive serums useless. The general rule is thinnest to thickest consistency, but morning and night routines have fundamentally different goals.
Morning Routine: Protection Mode
Your morning routine should focus on protection against UV, pollution, and free radicals. The correct order is: cleanser, toner (optional), vitamin C serum, eye cream, moisturizer, sunscreen. Sunscreen is always the final step — applying anything over it dilutes the SPF film.
Night Routine: Repair Mode
Nighttime is when your skin enters its repair cycle, with increased cell turnover and collagen production. The order is: double cleanse (oil cleanser followed by water-based cleanser), exfoliant (2-3x/week only), treatment serum (retinol or peptides), eye cream, night moisturizer or sleeping mask.
Why Thinnest to Thickest Works
Water-based products cannot penetrate oil-based ones. If you apply a thick cream before a water-based serum, the serum sits on top of the occlusive layer and cannot reach the skin. Always apply hydrating toners and water-based serums first, then oils and creams to seal everything in.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Applying retinol before vitamin C (they work at different pH levels and should be separated into AM/PM). Using physical sunscreen under chemical sunscreen (reverses the protection mechanism). Applying hyaluronic acid to dry skin (it needs moisture to bind to — always apply to damp skin).
Wait Times Between Products
Most products need 30-60 seconds to absorb before the next layer. Prescription retinoids benefit from a 20-minute wait after cleansing on completely dry skin. Vitamin C serums should absorb for 1-2 minutes before moisturizer. Sunscreen needs 2 minutes to form a uniform film before makeup application.
