Niacinamide Layering: Where It Fits in Your Routine
What Niacinamide Does
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) reduces pore appearance, controls oil production, fades hyperpigmentation, and strengthens the skin barrier. It works at concentrations of 2-5% (higher can cause irritation for some).
The Layering Rule: Thinnest to Thickest
Skincare products should be applied from the thinnest consistency to the thickest. This ensures each layer absorbs before the next one blocks it.
Where Niacinamide Fits
As a Serum (Most Common)
After cleansing and toning, niacinamide serum goes on before moisturizer and sunscreen. It is water-based, so it comes before oil-based products.
Full Morning Routine Order
- 1. Cleanser
- 2. Toner (optional)
- 3. Niacinamide serum
- 4. Vitamin C serum (if using — apply niacinamide first if pH differs, wait 5 minutes)
- 5. Moisturizer
- 6. Sunscreen SPF 30+
Full Evening Routine Order
- 1. Oil cleanser
- 2. Water cleanser
- 3. Exfoliant (2-3x per week only)
- 4. Toner
- 5. Niacinamide serum
- 6. Retinol (if using — niacinamide first, wait 10 min)
- 7. Moisturizer
What NOT to Mix With Niacinamide
Niacinamide is compatible with most ingredients. The old myth about niacinamide and vitamin C canceling each other has been debunked by modern formulations. However, if both are at very different pH levels, separate them by 5 minutes.
How Long Until Results?
Pore reduction: 4-8 weeks. Oil control: 2-4 weeks. Hyperpigmentation: 8-12 weeks. Barrier repair: 2-4 weeks.
