Seasonal Skincare Transitions: Spring to Summer Guide

Seasonal Skincare Transitions: Spring to Summer Guide

As temperatures rise and humidity increases, your skincare routine needs to evolve. Products that worked perfectly in winter can feel heavy and occlusive in summer, while new concerns like excess oil and sun damage emerge.

Switch to Lighter Textures

Replace heavy creams with gel-creams or lightweight lotions. Your skin produces more sebum in warm weather, so it needs less supplemental moisture from products. A hyaluronic acid-based gel moisturizer provides adequate hydration without the suffocating feeling of winter creams.

Increase Sun Protection

Summer means more UV exposure. Upgrade to SPF 50 if you were using SPF 30. Consider a tinted mineral sunscreen with iron oxides for broad-spectrum protection including visible light. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors — set a phone reminder if needed. Do not forget ears, neck, and the backs of hands.

Adjust Your Cleansing Routine

Increased sweat and oil production may require a slightly more thorough cleansing approach. If you use a cream cleanser, consider switching to a gel or foaming formula for evening cleansing. However, avoid over-cleansing — twice daily is sufficient. A double cleanse (oil + water-based) in the evening ensures all sunscreen and sweat are removed.

Modify Active Ingredients

Retinoids increase photosensitivity, so summer requires extra diligence with sunscreen if you continue using them. Some people prefer to reduce retinoid frequency in summer and increase antioxidant use (vitamin C, niacinamide) instead. Chemical exfoliants also increase sun sensitivity — consider reducing frequency and always applying SPF the following day.

Don't Forget Hydration

Air conditioning, swimming pools, and increased sweating all dehydrate the skin. Incorporate a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or beta-glucan. Apply to damp skin for maximum moisture-binding effect. A weekly hydrating mask compensates for the moisture-stripping effects of summer activities.
