Skincare Layering: Correct Order Guide
Why Order Matters
Skincare products must be applied in a specific order based on consistency (thinnest to thickest) and pH requirements. Applying products in the wrong order reduces absorption and can cause interactions that diminish effectiveness.
Morning Routine Order
Step 1: Cleanser
Use a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser (pH 5.0 to 5.5). Avoid harsh foaming cleansers that strip the skin barrier. A milky or gel formula works for most skin types.
Step 2: Toner (Optional)
Modern toners are hydrating, not astringent. Use a hydrating toner with hyaluronic acid or glycerin. Skip if your cleanser is already pH-balanced.
Step 3: Vitamin C Serum
Apply vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) to clean, dry skin. Wait 1 to 2 minutes for absorption before the next step. This antioxidant protects against UV damage throughout the day.
Step 4: Treatment Serum
Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, or peptide serums go here. Water-based, thin consistency.
Step 5: Eye Cream
Apply with ring finger, patting gently around the orbital bone.
Step 6: Moisturizer
Seals in all previous layers. Lightweight gel for oily skin, cream for dry skin.
Step 7: Sunscreen (SPF 30+)
Always the final step. Apply generously — 1/4 teaspoon for the face. Wait 15 minutes before sun exposure.
Evening Routine Order
- 1. Oil cleanser or micellar water (remove makeup/sunscreen)
- 2. Water-based cleanser (double cleanse)
- 3. Exfoliant (AHA/BHA, 2-3x per week only)
- 4. Retinol (wait 20 min after cleansing on dry skin)
- 5. Hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid or niacinamide)
- 6. Eye cream
- 7. Night cream or sleeping mask
Common Mistakes
- Applying retinol before vitamin C (wrong pH)
- Mixing AHA/BHA with retinol (irritation)
- Skipping sunscreen on cloudy days
- Using too many actives at once
