7 SPF Mistakes Ruining Your Skin Protection
Why Your Sunscreen Isn't Working
80% of visible skin aging comes from UV exposure. Yet most people apply sunscreen incorrectly, getting far less protection than the SPF label promises.
The 7 Mistakes
1. Not enough product. You need 1/4 teaspoon for face and neck. Most people apply 1/4 of that, getting SPF 5 instead of SPF 50.
2. Skipping cloudy days. 80% of UV rays penetrate clouds. UVA (aging rays) pass through windows too.
3. No reapplication. SPF degrades after 2 hours. Chemical filters break down when absorbing UV. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors.
4. Missing spots. Ears, eyelids, lips, neck, and hands are the most commonly missed areas and most frequently develop skin cancer.
5. Applying after moisturizer but before waiting. Let moisturizer absorb for 5 minutes before sunscreen. Otherwise you dilute the SPF film.
6. Relying on makeup SPF. Foundation with SPF 15 provides negligible protection because you don't apply enough. Always use a dedicated sunscreen underneath.
7. Storing in hot cars. Heat degrades sunscreen actives. A bottle left in a 100F+ car loses effectiveness within days.
The Fix
Apply generously, reapply every 2 hours, and cover every exposed area. This single habit prevents more aging than any serum or cream.
