Double Cleansing: Does Your Skin Type Need It?
What Is Double Cleansing?
A two-step method: first an oil-based cleanser to dissolve sunscreen, makeup, and sebum, followed by a water-based cleanser to remove sweat, dirt, and residual impurities.
The Science
Oil dissolves oil (lipophilic principle). Studies show double cleansing removes 98.7% of surface impurities versus 76.3% with single cleansing.
Who Should Double Cleanse?
Oily and Acne-Prone: YES
Excess sebum traps pollutants. Use oil cleanser followed by gentle foaming cleanser with salicylic acid.
Dry and Sensitive: SOMETIMES
Only if wearing heavy sunscreen or makeup. Use cleansing balm followed by hydrating milk cleanser.
Compromised Barrier: NO
Stick to a single gentle cleanse.
How to Do It
- Apply oil cleanser to DRY skin. Massage 60 seconds.
- Emulsify with lukewarm water. Rinse.
- Apply water-based cleanser to damp skin. Massage 30 seconds.
- Rinse. Pat dry.
Common Mistakes
Hot water, aggressive cleansing, coconut oil (comedogenic rating 4), and double cleansing morning AND night.
