Color Correcting: A Beginner's Guide
The Color Wheel in Makeup
Color correcting uses complementary colors to neutralize unwanted tones in your skin. It's simple color theory applied to makeup.
Green Cancels Redness
For rosacea, acne redness, or broken capillaries, apply a thin layer of green corrector before foundation. Use only on red areas — green on normal skin creates a gray cast.
Peach/Orange Cancels Dark Circles
Blue-purple undertones in dark circles are neutralized by peach (light skin) or orange (deep skin) correctors. Apply under the eye in a triangle shape before concealer.
Lavender Cancels Sallowness
Yellow undertones that make skin look tired or sallow are brightened by lavender corrector. Apply to the high points of the face: cheekbones, brow bone, and chin.
Yellow Cancels Purple
Bruises, visible veins, and purple-tinted dark spots are neutralized with yellow corrector.
Application Rules
- Apply corrector before foundation, not after
- Use a thin layer — too much creates an ashy finish
- Blend with a damp sponge for seamless results
- Follow with foundation as normal
