Color Theory for Makeup: Match Your Undertone
Why Undertone Matters More Than Shade
Two people can have the exact same skin depth (light/medium/dark) but look completely different in the same lipstick. The difference is undertone, the warm, cool, or neutral hue beneath your surface skin color.
How to Identify Your Undertone
The Vein Test
Look at your wrist veins in natural light: green-ish = warm, blue/purple = cool, blue-green = neutral.
The Jewelry Test
Gold flatters you more = warm. Silver looks better = cool. Both work equally = neutral.
The White Fabric Test
Hold pure white near your face. If your skin looks yellowish = warm. If it looks pinkish = cool. If neither = neutral.
Color Recommendations by Undertone
Warm Undertones
Lips: Coral, brick red, warm nude, terracotta. Eyes: Gold, bronze, warm brown, olive green. Blush: Peach, warm pink, apricot.
Cool Undertones
Lips: Blue-red, berry, mauve, plum. Eyes: Silver, cool taupe, navy, cool purple. Blush: Cool pink, rose, soft berry.
Neutral Undertones
You can pull from both palettes. Experiment freely, but you will find you still gravitate slightly warm or cool.
Common Mistakes
Foundation oxidizing orange? Likely too warm for your undertone. Lipstick making you look washed out? Wrong undertone family. Understanding this one concept eliminates 80% of makeup frustration.
